Cork’s musical talent shows no signs of slowing down as a number of local artists have released new music in recent weeks.

West-Cork based quintet The Kates released their latest single, You Don’t See It, on February 20th. The group, comprised of Eve Clague, Liz Clark, Mary Beth O’Mahony, Míde Houlihan and Paula K O’Brien, have seen great success across the country, including sellout gigs in DeBarra’s Clonakilty and Levis’ Ballydehob.

Praised for their energy, charisma and rich vocal harmonies, the group will play at Connolly’s of Leap on Saturday March 7th. With a debut album on the way, these women are definitely ones to watch.

Bandon’s The Shruggs, a pop/folk duo from West have also released their latest single recently, Misty Ireland. The acoustic duo, James Downing and Kees Hendrickx, describe the release as a ‘love letter to Ireland’. Written by Hendrickx, the track features vocals from musicians across the Irish Sea, the Cornwall Chorus, and the music video was filmed around West
Cork.

Following the success of his memoir launch last year, Joe Philpott returns with All Roads Lead To Where You Are, a single that serves as a musical companion to his acclaimed memoir. Philpott, who has shared stages with R.E.M., Sheryl Crow and Def Leppard, says the song is about the journey of life, ‘the miles, the silences, the wrong turns, and the people you become because of
them.’

He continues to perform with musical group The White Horse Guitar Club, whose rich harmonies and reinterpretations of folk, Americana, and Irish song remain central to his musical life.

Beyond Cork talent, trad-rock sensation CLADA will turn up the energy in De Barra’s, Clonakilty this Saturday February 28th. The five-piece band have become a viral sensation on social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram, and have just completed a two-month residency in Orlando, Florida.

Combining Irish traditional sounds with pop, funk and dance music, the group give a fresh spin on traditional music to keep it on par with today’s modern mainstream genre.
