UTILITY boxes across Skibbereen are being transformed into vibrant works of art thanks to a new Tidy Towns initiative.
The Urban Artwork Project, which is part of Skibbereen Tidy Town’s three-year national plan, focuses on improving the streetscape of the town while celebrating biodiversity and the work of community groups.
The first installation has now been completed by local artist Jessica Challacombe, on a utility box opposite the West Cork Hotel, featuring Skibbereen’s celebrated rowers on the River Ilen.

On the reverse side, facing the Heritage Centre, Jessica has highlighted local wildlife including a heron and swan, bringing a real sense of place and identity to the streetscape.
Speaking on the initiative, Jerome Dwyer, chairperson of Skibbereen Tidy Towns said: ‘This work has only been possible thanks to the incredible support of the town. Funding was raised through a successful partnership with Skibbereen Chamber of Commerce, including the West Cork Calendar fundraiser, generously sponsored by Skibbereen Credit Union and a number of local businesses.
‘We are deeply grateful for that collective effort and ongoing community backing.’
Work will continue over the coming days, with boxes at the entrance to the Heritage Centre next, followed by installations at the Schull Road roundabout, including the Rossa Road and Marsh Road entrances.
The full series is expected to be completed within the next two to three days.
This builds on a growing body of public art across Skibbereen in recent years, including the Fairfield gable wall, the Church Restaurant rear wall, the Abbeystrewry garden, and the wider mural network across Ludgate, Horse and Hound, and Vickery’s Lane.
Skibbereen Tidy Towns is planning four additional boxes for future phases of the project and is currently exploring further funding opportunities.
