A DUBLIN motorist who was caught driving without insurance in Macroom has been convicted and fined for the offence.

Murman Abashidze (51) of Fortfield Road, Terenure, Dublin, pleaded guilty to driving without insurance at Macroom District Court.

The court heard that on March 16th last Mr Abashidze was stopped at a garda checkpoint on the R584 at Tullatreada, Macroom.

They found that there was no insurance disc displayed on the car and the court heard he has no previous convictions.

Defence solicitor Patrick Goold said his client had received a phone call from a friend in Macroom, saying he was sick.

He said his client worked as a carpenter in Cork.

The owner of the business he works for, who was ill, had him insured on the car.

Judge Joanne Carroll convicted and fined him  €275 and gave him four months to pay the fine.
