THE Society of St Vincent de Paul in Clonakilty continues to be a vital source of hope and support for those in need within the local community.

Over the past year, the organisation has provided assistance to families and individuals facing hardship, offering essentials such as food, fuel, and housing — as well as life-changing educational opportunities.

In 2024, Clonakilty SVP spent over €108,000 helping people in the community. This included €58,000 in direct assistance to families, ensuring that young children didn’t go hungry and that homes stayed warm through the winter months.

A key focus of the society’s work is education — recognised as the true pathway out of poverty. Last year, over €40,000 was awarded in education bursaries, helping 25 students of all ages to continue their studies, gain qualifications, and build brighter futures. The bursaries are awarded to students in third-level education and apprenticeships. ‘These bursaries can change the history of a family,’ Jim Hurley, conference president, explained. ‘Education gives people the tools to lift themselves out of poverty.’

In addition, St Vincent de Paul provides social and affordable housing for 25 older and vulnerable adults in the Clonakilty area, offering safe, secure and dignified accommodation for those who might otherwise face isolation or homelessness.

These homes are located in Ozanam Court, St Vincent’s Place and St Paul’s Close which is undergoing substantial redevelopment with the addition of two apartments to the existing eight.

This project will be grant aided by Cork County Council and the Department of Housing to the tune of 95%.

This extraordinary work is made possible through the generosity of the people of Clonakilty and surrounding areas who donated almost €60,000 in 2024.

However, with spending exceeding donations, local SVP members are appealing to the community to once again dig deep and give what they can.

‘Every euro makes a difference,’ Jim continued. ‘Your donation might mean a warm meal for a child, fuel for a struggling family, or a chance for a young person to pursue their education. You may never know whose life you’ve touched, but your kindness is felt every single day in this community.’

The Clonakilty Conference of St Vincent de Paul wishes to thank everyone who has supported their work and continues to make it possible to reach out to those most in need.

The annual collection will take place on December 12th, 13th and 14th.
