Well-established group Citadel, whose performers are from countries such as Burundi, South Africa, DR Congo, Angola and Tanzania, will perform songs from home, accompanied by rhythms and tunes from around the world.
Some of the musicians are refugees, others are newly arrived International Protection Applicants.
Tracy Sheehan, coordinator at the Dunmanway Family Resource Centre, said: ‘Rural communities can sometimes feel isolated from multicultural events that happen in larger cities, so hosting Africa Day locally creates an opportunity for connection, learning, and celebration for everyone.’
The event grew organically from the community following a culinary cuisine evening that took place in the Family Resource Centre. Food will be served from 1-2pm, with a coffee truck on site as well.
Visitors can expect hair braiding, face painting, and showcases of different items representing the broad range of cultures across Africa.
