TWO significant support schemes aimed at assisting farmers, hauliers, transport operations and fishermen facing rising fuel costs has been announced by the government.

The Road Transports Support Scheme, as well as the dedicated Fuel Support Scheme, represents a substantial intervention to protect key sectors in rural Ireland and West Cork.

The Rural Transports Support Scheme will provide financial assistance to hauliers, ‘own account’ operators, passenger transport providers, including school and rural transport services.

Payments will be scaled to support smaller operators proportionately ensuring that local and family-run businesses in West Cork are protected.

The €100 million Fuel Support Scheme for farmers and contractors will be based on actual fuel usage and is designed to assist those most impacted by the sharp rise in the cost of marked gas oil.

A fuel support scheme for fisherrmen and aquaculture tailored to the specific needs of that sector will be operated separately by Bord Iascaigh Mhara on behalf of the Department of Agriculture.

This will also be calculated on the abscess of fuel consumption, with specific eligibility criteria for the different categories of fishermen.

Applications for both schemes are expected to open in May, with payments to follow shortly thereafter in June.

The supports form part of a wider government response to increased energy costs, including existing fuel rebates and excise reductions

Speaking on the announcement, Senator Noel O'Donovan said: ‘these measures are both timely and necessary. Across West Cork, we have a really strong farming and fishing community, and a transport sector that is vital in keeping our rural economy moving. Rising fuel costs have placed enormous pressure on these sectors, and this targeted support will provide real and meaningful relief for people.’

‘I would strongly encourage all eligible farmers, contractors, hauliers and transport operators in West Cork to apply as soon as the schemes open. This is a practical support that will make a real difference on the ground,' he concluded.
