PET owners are being urged to keep their furry friends safe and warm as temperatures plunge this weekend.
An official warning from Met Éireann has prompted tips to help owners ensure their cats and dogs can survive the cold snap.
The advice comes as forecasters predict a very chilly weekend, with temperatures to dip as low as –3C and warnings of sleet, ice and even snow.

Research by petinsurance.ie shows Cork residents are committed to pet care - with 71% of owners admitting to buying clothing or accessories to help their pets cope in cold weather.
Top tips include:
Drying off – If your dog or cat gets wet, it’s a good idea to bring them indoors and dry them with a towel. Make sure they have access to a clean, warm, dry room and/or bed.
Paw care - Mud, grit and even de-icing salt from roads and pavements can get stuck between pets’ toes and make them sore, so paws should be cleaned after each walk.
Anti-freeze alert - Make sure any spills are cleaned up straight away, because anti-freeze is highly toxic to pets.
Wrap up warm - Small toy breeds, those with clipped coats and young or older pets will be more susceptible to feeling the chill and a well-fitting coat can make them more comfortable in chilly weather. Remember that it might take them a while to get used to wearing a coat or raingear, so some practice sessions at home when they’re relaxed could help.
Petinsurance.ie’s Andrew Simpson said: ‘The fact most people invest in some kind of cold weather gear is further evidence of how important these cats and dogs are to us. If people are concerned or confused about whether their pet needs any extra layers, or how they’re coping in the cold, it’s a good idea to consult an expert, while our policyholders can also contact our 24/7 Pet Careline.’
