THE much-needed upgrade of the N22 Macroom to Ovens Road, which sees over 30,000 vehicles travel on it daily, has been included on the list of pre-approval projects in the Department of Transport’s National Development Plan (NDP) sectoral plans for 2026 to 2030, which were announced last week.

Works will include a key safety and capacity upgrade, with construction expected to commence after 2030.

Cork North West Fianna Fáil TD Andrias Moynihan said the inclusion of the N22 Macroom to Ovens upgrade is a ‘significant milestone.’

‘This route holds enormous strategic importance for both Cork and Kerry and upgrading it is essential for improving journey times, reducing congestion and most importantly ensuring road safety for all who travel this route daily.’

Deputy Moynihan emphasised the urgent need for safety works along the existing road.

‘We have already seen improvements at the Kilcondy junction this year and the Casltemore Junction is progressing to the design stage. However, many more junctions along the existing route urgently require attention to enhance safety.’

He added that the N22 Macroom to Ovens road is a crucial transport artery for the region.

‘The new road project’s listing for approval is just the initial step; we need to ensure that the dangerous junctions along the existing road receive immediate attention for safety improvements. Commuters along the N22 road have waited a long time to see this project recognised. My commitment remains steadfast in advancing and securing further safety measure for our commuters in the meantime.’

Cork North West Fine Gael TD John Paul O’Shea said this represents a significant step forward in improving safety, connectivity and economic growth in this area of Cork.

Other Cork projects included in the NDP Sectoral Plans for 2026 to 2030 include the M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy route and the N25 Midelton and Youghal bypasses.
