Why the Warning?
The primary concern is the combination of heavy and persistent rain falling on already saturated ground.
This significantly increases the risk of negative impacts across the region.
- Type: Rainfall
- Message: Heavy and persistent rain falling on saturated ground.
- Affected Regions: Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, and Waterford.
Possible Impacts for West Cork
West Cork, with its numerous rivers, coastal areas, and localized topography, is particularly susceptible to the conditions outlined in the warning.
Residents and visitors should anticipate and prepare for the following:
- Flooding: A high risk of localised spot flooding and excess surface water on roads, especially in low-lying areas and locations with poor drainage. Given the already saturated ground, river levels may rise quickly.
- Difficult Travelling Conditions: Motorists should expect longer journey times due to surface water, possible road closures, and general hazardous conditions.
- Poor Visibility: Heavy downpours will lead to significantly reduced visibility for all road users.
Safety Advice for Local Residents
Cork County Council's Severe Weather Assessment Team is actively monitoring the situation and has advised the public to exercise extreme caution:
- On the Roads: Slow down and increase braking distance. Do not attempt to drive through flowing or standing water, as the depth can be deceptive. Be especially mindful of pedestrians and cyclists.
- Flood Prone Areas: Residents in known flood-risk areas should remain vigilant and consider moving valuable items and vehicles to higher ground where possible.
- Monitoring: Keep an eye on the latest weather updates from Met Éireann and local council announcements.
For non-emergency issues like surface flooding or road damage, contact the Cork County Council's Emergency Out of Hours number.
For genuine emergencies, always call 999 or 112.
Stay safe, and be prepared for a very wet 24-hour period.
