Motorists are advised to avoid the Macroom Bypass (N22) this morning, as the road has been closed in both directions following a series of road traffic collisions.

The closures come after extremely hazardous driving conditions, with reports of widespread black ice along the stretch.

Emergency services are currently on-site attending to multiple incidents.

Black ice is particularly dangerous because it is nearly invisible to the naked eye.

Even if the road looks clear, surfaces remain treacherous after overnight freezing temperatures.
