THERE’S nothing like it this side of Cork city, or Killarney, and children are lining up to pamper their pooch.

People are bringing dogs of all shapes and sizes to Trevor Hegarty’s Costcutters in Skibbereen to have them washed, made fragrant, and blow-dried.

The addition of outdoor washing machines, a 20kg clothes dryer, and the Wash.ME grooming station is causing a bit of a stir.

Trevor, who has been in business for 30 years, and employs 25 full and part time staff, told The Southern Star: ‘A company installed it at the start of the month and we’re delighted with it. It’s an addition to the offering we already have.

‘It’s turning into a bit of a family thing because you see couples with their children, washing their dogs, so they obviously get enjoyment out of it.

‘The feedback has been very positive. It’s definitely a talking point. I suppose it is a novelty because there aren’t many of them around.’

It is the newness of the thing that first attracted Tim Donovan, an American who now lives at North Street, Skibbereen.

He brought Rascal, an 18-year old Bichon Shitsu mix, for a dip on Saturday. Being videoed while trying to read and understand the instructions took a bit of doing.

It costs €10 to wash a small dog and takes ten minutes, but you need to give it a minute at the start, much like an automatic car wash.

Rascal was definitely in need of a wash but came out clean, sweet-smelling, and fluffy after giving his owner and bystanders a shower free gratis.
