WELL-KNOWN Clonakilty Rugby Club referee Garrett McCabe is spearheading a charity cycle from Cork to Limerick that will raise vital funds and awareness for the Alzheimer Society of Ireland.
McCabe, a Munster Rugby referee, has organised ‘Whistle and Wheels’, an event that will see approximately 20 referees cycle more than 100 kilometres on Saturday, May 16, from Virgin Media Park in Cork to Thomond Park in Limerick, finishing just ahead of the Munster v Lions fixture later that day.
The initiative aims to unite the wider rugby community around a cause that affects families and communities across Ireland.

‘We’re excited and proud to bring our Munster rugby community together for a great cause and to support the Alzheimer Society of Ireland,’ explained event organiser McCabe.
‘Over 100 kilometres will test body and spirit but, in true rugby fashion, we’ll show grit and determination all the way to the try line.’
The cycle will begin at Sunday’s Well RFC at Virgin Media Park before stopping at a number of clubs across Munster: Mallow RFC (coffee stop), Charleville RFC (lunch stop) and Garryowen FC (final stop).
The cyclists will then complete the journey at Thomond Park.
Members of the public can support the event by donating via the official Payzone fundraising link, sharing the event on social media via @themaninthemiddle.ref, or cheering on the cyclists along the route.
