A COUNCILLOR has slammed those responsible for dumping parts of a broken wardrobe on the side of a road last week near where she lives.

Bandon-based Cllr Ann Bambury (SD) said this is the second time in the past 12 months that rubbish has been dumped on the roadside near Laragh.

‘Leaving piles of timber, broken doors and mirrors dumped on a roadside is not only an eyesore but also creates a serious safety hazard for all road users,’ she said. ‘Broken glass and sharp materials cause real injury and dumped waste can easily attract even more rubbish.

‘I’m furious that taxpayers’ money will now have to be spent cleaning up this illegal dumping. This mess should never have happened and the public shouldn’t be left paying the price for someone else’s irresponsibility.’

She said gardaí attended the scene but there was no marking on the furniture to indicate where it came from.

‘It was a built-in wardrobe taken apart with the mirrors just thrown on the side of the road,’ said Cllr Bambury. ‘This is the second time this road has been targeted as household waste was dumped there before.’

Cllr Bambury contacted Cork County Council and said they removed the rubbish within an hour of her call.

‘Dumping rubbish like this is completely unacceptable. It’s selfish, dangerous and shows a total disregard for the local community and environment.’

She urged people to make necessary inquiries to ensure that the person doing renovations or construction at their homes are disposing of waste illegally.

‘You should always ask for proof of disposal and proper receipts from authorised waste facilities. Homeowners can also face consequence if their waste ends up illegally dumped. There is no excuse for treating public roadsides, green areas or local communities like a dumping ground.’
