CORK made a winning start to the new All-Ireland LGFA U20 championship.

The Rebels’ first appearance in the new competition saw Denis Mulvihill’s side beat Dublin 1-6 to 0-7 in Cloughduv.

Ilen Rovers’ Leah Carey lined out at centre-back with club mate Meabh Collins starting in midfield. Kinsale’s Caoimhe Horgan and Castlehaven’s Hannah Sheehy occupied the two starting corner forward positions. Cliodhna Ó Shea (Bantry Blues), Ellie McCarthy (Castlehaven) and Aoibhinn McKeogh (Ibane Ladies) were also involved.

Dublin travelled south having already accounted for Mayo in their opening group fixture. Meath is the other county in the group.

Caoimhe Horgan and Hannah Sheehy raised white flags during an opening half in which Brianna Smith’s goal handed the Rebels a 1-4 to 0-1 interval advantage.

Horgan was on the scoresheet once again in the second period where, despite a Dublin fightback, Cork held on for a deserved 1-6 to 0-7 victory. Saoirse Cunningham (0-3) was the Rebels’ other scorer.

Next up for the Cork U20s is an away trip to Galway on Saturday, May 23rd.
