COUNCIL officials have confirmed that they are to advertise in the coming weeks for space in Bandon town centre in order to provide extra car park spaces.

At last week’s meeting of Bandon Kinsale Municipal District Municipal District manager Padraig Barrett confirmed that they met with members of the Bandon Business Association (BBA) since the last municipal district meeting.

He confirmed that the Council is looking to advertise for a space with special specifications for what they are looking for in terms of car park spaces.

Councillors were also informed that resurfacing and relining has been carried out at both Ballymodan and Mill Place car parks.

Senior executive engineer Richard Cahill said the design office helped out with the design and layout and pointed out that an extra five car park spaces have been created at Mill Place car park.

‘It is now one way and the layout is much better,’ he said.

Cllr John Michael Foley (FG) welcomed the provision of five extra car park spaces there and the fact that Cork County Council is to advertise for space for car parks, something he suggested at the last meeting.

Cllr Gillian Coughlan (FF) described it as a ‘red letter day’ because Council officials are officially seeking to purchase land for a car park in Bandon town centre.

She said it’s really important for the town and suggested that it would be no harm to speak to property owners along McSwiney Quay also.

‘With two ring roads planned for Bandon we are certainly at a historic junction. Bandon is growing and the State recognises it,’ she said.

New draft bye-laws for the four Council owned car parks in Ballymodan Place, Brady’s Lane, Glasslyn Road and Mill Place hope to enhance accessibility and support greater movement  through Bandon’s commercial centre and the closing date for public submissions was April 15th last.

Cork County Council has also introduced a pilot scheme at Bandon GAA Club where 28 car park spaces are being provided for workers and shoppers accessing the town centre.
