THE dumping of two trashed caravans in Glengarriff are eyesores at both the entry and exit point of the village, according to Beara-based Cllr Finbarr Harrington.

The Independent councillor raised the issue at a meeting of the West Cork Municipal District, where he called for the owners of the caravans to be tracked down, using CCTV footage, and prosecuted.

‘I know the Council’s environmental department is dealing with this, but can we contact Transport Infrastructure Ireland and the local gardaí as well?’ Cllr Harrington asked.

The councillor said it was important to find out ‘who dumped the caravans at the side of the road close to one of the most beautiful villages in Ireland.’

Cllr Harrington was of the opinion that if the issue was publicised and the perpetrators prosecuted it might prevent it from happening again.

Cllr Danny Collins (Ind Ire) said he knows where one of the caravans came from.

He agreed: ‘It’s not right that people should use our roadside as a dumping ground. It’s not nice coming into the village and seeing this broken-down caravan on the verge.’

Local area engineer, Kevin Lynch, informed the council members that the matter is being investigated by the gardaí and the council’s environmental department.
