A WEST Cork couple in their 90s proved that age is no barrier to living well as they led the way at a vibrant wellness event in the Kinsale Hotel & Spa.
Betty (90) and Jim Smith (93) from Newcestown were among 50 attendees who gathered for a day of movement, music, and connection at the increasingly popular Active Agers event.
The scheme, created by Lorna O’Regan of Feel Good Health & Fitness, is designed specifically for people over 60, with a focus on maintaining strength, balance, mobility, and overall wellbeing.

As these events continue to grow in popularity across West Cork, they are fast becoming a cornerstone for those looking to stay active, social, and energised.
From the moment the day began, there was a palpable sense of positivity in the room.
Attendees took part in functional fitness, chair yoga, and dance sessions, all tailored to be age-appropriate while still challenging and enjoyable.
Beyond the physical activity, the day also offered valuable insights from a range of expert guest speakers.
Nutritional Therapy Practitioner Mary Cotter shared practical advice on urinary tract health, while Vanessa Bradbury of the Alzheimer’s Society spoke about the importance of supporting brain health as we age.
Vera Keohane of Enjoy Your Home provided thoughtful and practical guidance on creating calm, organised living spaces, highlighting how our home environment can significantly impact our mood and overall wellbeing.
Attendees also heard from Noirin Murphy, Optician, and Brian, Audiologist, from Specsavers Bandon, who spoke about the latest developments in eye and hearing care and offered simple tips for maintaining both.
A highlight of the day was a live food demonstration by Lorna O’Regan, who emphasised the powerful role nutrition plays in supporting energy, mood, and long-term health.
Her approach focused on making healthy eating achievable and sustainable, encouraging attendees to adopt small, consistent habits rather than striving for perfection.
What truly sets the Active Agers events apart, however, is the sense of connection they foster.
People arrive on their own or with friends but quickly become part of a welcoming and inclusive community.
Laughter, conversation, and shared experiences are as central to the day as the exercise itself.
For Betty and Jim, who attend weekly classes and have now participated in three of these events, the benefits are clear.
Their energy, enthusiasm, and commitment serve as an inspiration to others and a powerful reminder that age is just a number.
As the day came to a close, attendees left with smiles on their faces and a noticeable lift in both mood and energy.
The question on many lips was simple: when is the next one?
With momentum continuing to build, it seems this growing wellness movement is only just getting started.
