FUNDING of €150,000 has been granted to advance proposals to realign the road and widen the bridge at Adrigole, writes Jackie Keogh.

Members of the council’s Western Division were told the scope of the preliminary design has increased to consider the realignment of the western approach.

Roads director Mark O’Sullivan said documentation and environmental reports are being prepared, but that formal consent has been given to widen the bridge.

He said the preparation documentation and reporting for the Part 8 planning process will be completed by July 2026, which will then be subject to Department of Transport approval and continued funding.

Given the large volume of lorries travelling to and from the fishing port of Castletownbere, Cllr Finbarr Harrington (Ind) said the realignment of the approach road and the widening of the bridge is vital.

He also pointed out that the broken wall on the bridge needs to be repaired as soon as possible.

The Independent councillor paid tribute to the council’s roads department for all of the funding secured and projects planned for the year ahead, and he thanked the council’s outdoor operatives for all their hard work, especially over the last six months when the weather was dreadful.
