MORE than €13m is being invested in some of West Cork’s roads this year as part of a restoration and maintenance programme.
ork County Council is making a total investment of €13,095,037 for dozens of projects across the region, with many kilometres of local and regional road on the list.
Figures from council road reports which were presented at a recent meeting of the West Cork Municipal District point to a substantial push to improve road conditions.

Highlighted in the Skibbereen Roads Report, the restoration improvement programme covers 33 projects and 38km of road at a cost of €5,216,153.
Among the larger schemes are Ballineen Bridge Cross on the L4631 from Skibbereen to Caherkirky, at Kilronane on the R599 Dunmanway to Clonakilty, Fareannahineeny on the L8534 Cummernamart to Clogher, and the R-587-167 and R-587-196 Macroom to Dunmanway.
Other works included are on the L8606 at Derrymeeleen between Ballyvoige and Derrymeeleen, the Old Timoleague Road into Clonakilty on the section Ashgrove to Ring Road, and on the R595 Skibbereen to Baltimore.
The maintenance programme in the Skibbereen Roads Report covers 30 projects and 53km of road at a cost of €1,282,815.
Three of the main works listed are the section Red Strand to Ardfield on the L4009, the L4228 Shreelane to Derryleigh Bridge and Aghills Road South on the L42202 Shepperton to Rineen.
The Bantry Roads Report sets out 26 projects for improvement, with 22km of works and spending of €5,331,604.
The list includes the L4415 at Cadogans Strand, L8475 Skeaghanore, along with key routes at Hospital Road in Bantry, the R585-415 near Kealkill-Waterworks, and the Castletownbere road network.
The maintenance programme in the Bantry Roads Report is made up of 54 projects and 53km of road works, backed by €1,264,465.
Some examples from the Bantry maintenance list are the R591-340 at Crookhaven, the L-4704-0 Pier Road to Durrus Court, and the L-4704-60 Ahakista.
The works are already ongoing or earmarked to be carried out this year.
