A 46-YEAR-old cyclist involved in an collision with a car in Castletownbere featured in RTÉ’s new six-part documentary series which goes beyond the headlines and behind the scenes at Cork University Hospital (CUH).
The first episode of Any Given Day: Cork University Hospital aired on Wednesday night (January 7th) on RTÉ One and the RTÉ Player which detailed how Barry Power was airlifted to CUH by air ambulance after his bike collided with a car on the main road out of Castletownbere.
The air ambulance crew then gave the doctors at CUH details of his injuries after Mr Power broke the windscreen of a car and was thrown 30 metres following the collision.

In the first episode we see Dr Oge Iwegbulem order a pan scan to assess serious trauma to Barry’s head, spine, chest, abdomen and pelvis.
Filmed over six months, the series offers access inside CUH, capturing the round the clock shifts of the thousands of professionals who work tirelessly to deliver care. Through staff stories and patient journeys, Any Given Day follows extraordinary moments of care and emergency at the busy hospital.
‘Viewers will witness teams respond to a cyclist who has been airlifted to the hospital following a serious road collision, while elsewhere doctors face complex decisions as an expectant mother undergoing cancer treatment attends a critical pregnancy scan,’ said a spokesperson.
‘In the Emergency Department, staff treat everything from sports injuries to severe accidents, including patients rushed in after seizures or traumatic chest injuries.’
The series also captures high-stakes procedures, from emergency stroke interventions to complex surgeries, all while families and loved ones wait anxiously for news.
Each episode follows staff shifts and patient journeys across the hospital, with every story captured over the course of a single day.
