A STEERING group has been formed in Bandon to push for a public swimming pool, following a public meeting on the issue last week in the Munster Arms Hotel, writes Kieran O’Mahony.

Minister of State Christopher O’Sullivan organised the event and welcomed the good turnout which included local public representatives.

‘It was really well attended and it was very obvious [that there is a] clear need and demand for a public swimming pool in Bandon demonstrated by the fact that it is the largest town in West Cork,’ he said.

‘Up to 15 people volunteered to join a steering group which will now form a pathway forward in terms of how we can deliver a clear state-of-the art public pool for Bandon town and its hinterland.’

As the largest town in West Cork with a population of 8,101 as of Census 2022, the town is growing even further with a number of large housing developments in the pipeline. The nearest public facility for people in the area is at the West Cork Leisure in Dunmanway, which involves a 55km round trip.

A planned pop-up pool for the town which was first mooted over three years ago failed to materialise at the time.

Meanwhile, Cork County Council has confirmed that a combined Gym and Pool membership will be available at the West Cork Leisure Centre in Dunmanway from January 1st for €60 per person per calendar month.

The Pay as you go option will still be available and rates will remain unchanged.
